PROPHECY FEST 2024
BALVER HÖHLE, GERMANY
5.-7. September 2024
Unlike other festivals, we will not start with the most “unknown” artist and end with the “headliners”. To us, they are all headliners and were chosen as we expect amazing performances. Therefore, the running order will reflect what we consider the optimum in terms of dramaturgy and suspension.
ARÐ are very much a labour of love. When mastermind Mark Deeks had the excellent idea to combine insular doom with ‘monkish’ choirs, he found a new musical formula that has been dubbed ‘monastic doom’ and become an instant hit with the aficionados. Little did he know, this project in celebration of his Northumbrian home would get on national UK news and even make it onto German television. Expect a triumphant return to Balve with a brand new album!
In 2023, fate itself conspired against ARTHUR BROWN appearing in Balve. While the beloved singer was healthy and sound, all of his band fell ill. Of course, the legendary English singer immediately agreed to return the next year. Even better, Arthur promised to bring a new album and an even more flamboyant show in his magic bag of tricks. The octogenarian has wrapped the cave around his fingers before and he will do so again in 2024.
Ever since DOOL rocked the cave last in 2021, the Dutch have been one of the most requested bands. Well, here you go! The chart-storming Dutch five-piece featuring enigmatic singer Raven are currently busy recording a new album, which means that these dark rockers will bring brand new songs to Balve for sure. For a delicious taste of things to come, check out their hard rocking new live album “Visions of Summerland (Live at Arminius Church Rotterdam).”
It is a given that Markus Stock will perform at Prophecy Fest with one or more of his bands. The surprise lies in what he will be doing as it is always a special performance to the delight of his dedicated following. In 2024, Balve will witness the world live premiere of EMPYRIUM‘s third album “Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays” (1999). This masterpiece will be performed in full and many will flock to the cave from around the globe just to see this.
East German avant-garde black metal outfit FARSOT will release their fourth album “Life Promised Death” in February 2024. The forthcoming full-length revolves around a conceptual story about life slipping out of hand. One remarkable aspect of FARSOT is that of the band’s five current members, three remain from the original founders and four of them have been playing together for at least 20 years. Therefore it is only fitting that FARSOT will celebrate their 25th anniversary in the cave.
When FEN emerged from the Fens of East Anglia with their ‘Ancient Sorrow’ demo in 2006, they were among other young, innovative English black metal acts including WINTERFYLLETH and WODENSTHRONE. FEN soon went their own way in search of new forms of expression beyond all genre limitations. This made them forerunners of the now popular post-black metal. The acclaimed latest album ‘Monuments to Absence’ again proves their massive talent.
IN THE WOODS…
With their debut album “Heart of the Ages” (1995), IN THE WOODS… created one of the corner stones of Nordic black metal. Introducing at the time new psychedelic elements to the dark sound, the Norwegians delivered a musical template that many other artists have taken as inspiration. Introvert and reclusive in the beginning, IN THE WOODS… have started to regularly release high quality albums and touring in recent years.
There can be no doubt that PARADISE LOST were the leading pioneers of a new metal style that combined the seeming opposites of death and doom. The band from West Yorkshire never stopped to add new elements and layers to what became also dubbed insular doom due to its decidedly English roots ever since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1990. PARADISE LOST always remained on top as their latest huge success “Obsidian” (2020) proves.
PERCHTA are anything but your run-of-the-mill black metal act. The Austrian project, fronted by the eponymous singer and percussionist, is delving deep into the language and ancient lore of their Alpine home. With her debut album “Ufång”, she caused quite a stir due to both the conceptual and musical strength. Currently, PERCHTA are working hard on their next full-length, which they will introduce to the Cave of Balve. Don’t miss this very special treat.
With TRIPTYKON the pioneering musical genius of mastermind Tom Gabriel “Warrior” Fischer continues to change the course of heavy music. His achieved legacy with HELLHAMMER and CELTIC FROST can hardly be overstated. These bands form founding pillars, on which Nordic black metal and later also the global scene have been built upon. Now, TRIPTYKON shape the sound of coming generations with their dark avant-garde creations.
